  • Choosing the service you need

    If you're wondering what level of medical service you need for your ailment or injury, the NHS 'Choose Well' guidelines are as follows :

    • Self-care : for the treatment of minor illnesses by combining a well-stocked medicine cabinet with rest and plenty of fluids
    • NHS Direct – 0845 46 47: phone service for any health questions 24 hours a day, and to find local health services 
    • Pharmacists : for advice on common illnesses and the best medicines
    • GPs : for medical advice, examinations and prescriptions for illnesses you can't shake off
    • Out of Hours GP Service : for urgent medical advice, examinations and treatment which cannot wait until your normal GP surgery is open
    • Minor injuries units / Walk-in Centres : for treatment of minor illnesses or injuries without an appointment
    • Accident & Emergency / 999 : for critical or life-threatening situations
  • Walk-in Centres & Minor Injuries Units

    Bath Urgent Care Centre (UCC) – Bath’s walk-in centre has been replaced by a new urgent care centre which offers 24/7 minor injuries treatment. The UCC is situated adjacent to the A&E department at the RUH. If you are unwell or have a minor injury, you can call the 111 non-emergency number for advice on the most suitable treatment. They will let you know if a visit to the UCC is appropriate or help you access the Out of Hours GP service. You can also attend the UCC as a walk-in patient. (If you believe your illness or injury is life-threatening, call 999.) 

    Paulton Hospital's Minor Injuries Unit (MIU) is open 7 days a week from 8.00am–21.30pm (last patient entry at 21.15) and provides provides treatment for minor illnesses and injuries such as cuts, bruises, sprains and simple fractures.   • Out of hours GP service

    Out of Hours GP Service – This is now based at Bath's RUH at Ambulatory Care, next to the emergency (A&E) department. This service is run by B&NES Emergency Medical Service (BEMS) and covers urgent medical problems when GP surgeries are closed: ie from 6pm–8am from Monday to Friday, as well as 24hrs over weekends and during bank holidays. This is not a walk-in service; you must call first on 03000 339933. This number also applies for Paulton Hospital's out of hours service. If necessary, this service will arrange for a doctor will make a house call. For life-threatening emergencies, dial 999
